One of the best three teams in the TBL?!?!
Yup, the Firebirds are pretty good
Today, I need to apologize for a mistake I made last week, and then brag about how awesome the Firebirds are doing. So let’s get the apology out of the way.
Last week, I said the Firebirds were down one when Dreko Palmer hit the shot that sealed the team’s victory against the Fredericksburg Flying Cows. However, this wasn’t the case. The scoreboard hadn’t been updated on stream, so I thought the score was 98-102 before the Cows’ player hit the three. In reality, the score was 99-102 when the Cows’ player hit the three, meaning that he tied the game. That also means that Dreko’s shot was a game-winner, not just a shot to emphasize the lead the Firebirds have.
Dreko Palmer is even cooler than I initially told you guys, and I apologize for that.
To start the season, Palmer is averaging 15.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. These are good stats for any player, but the crazy part about this is that Palmer has been off to a slow start this year. Normally his scoring average is almost double what it is right now, which means once he shakes off the rust, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
William Vedder, Tre Gray, and Ahmad Abdullah have been off to great statistical starts this year. Vedder came out of nowhere and has been one of the team’s leading scorers, averaging 17.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Abdullah is averaging 18 points per game, and Gray is averaging 15.3 points per game. However, everyone’s been stepping up in key moments throughout games whenever we’ve needed their help the most.
Just like how the Firebirds’ 4-0 start is unprecedented for the team, so is the margin of victory by which the Firebirds win their games. After the first game which the Firebirds won by 12, they won their next three games by five, seven, and two respectively.
This is very unlike the Firebirds! In the past, we’ve blown out our opponents by large margins, never giving them a chance to recover. However, I’d argue this year’s method of winning is more entertaining for the fans.
Another amazing thing about the Firebirds’ undefeated start is not just how unprecedented it is for the team, but how rare it is for the league. After handing the Flying Cows their first loss of the season, the Firebirds are one of three teams in the TBL that are still undefeated; the other two teams are the Potawatomi Fire and the Los Angeles Ignite.
Our next home game is this Friday, and it’s our last home game until Mid-Apri! So, what are you waiting for? Make sure you buy tickets here, and support the Firebirds as we try to head into the weekend 5-0!
